July Results July 30, 2006
Came in 3rd at the July 23rd ER autocross, about 2.4 seconds behind the 1st-place Mini Cooper S. Those freakin’ Minis are the bane of my existence. Them and the giant nail that I picked up in my left front tire.
I felt pretty good about my performance, for the most part I was driving right and the car felt good. What I need now is to learn how to really push the car. When I feel oversteer starting to come on I’ve been trying to throttle-modulate it and I’m not sure that’s the best technique for this car since lifting the throttle means going off-boost. Probably what I should do is keep the pedal firm until the car really starts to step out of line…
I may just completely write off competing at the next event and instead go for making the car spin. Having never spun the car I don’t really know where the line is or what happens when I cross it and lose control.
315 completely disorganized photos from the July event.
New Toys
These are my new street wheels, Prodrive P1 (P-WRC1) in Anthracite. These were originally made for Prodrive’s special-edition P1 Subaru WRX offered in the UK. I’ve been lusting for a set for quite some time. I think this color is really hot on a light-colored car, the “dirty” appearance goes perfect with my infrequent car washing habits.
I’ve also ordered new Rota G-Force 17×8 wheels in Cosmic Blue to replace the 17×7.5 Sub-Zeros as my racing wheels. Rota only offers Cosmic Blue as a standard color on one of their wheel designs, these G-Forces were ordered as part of a customer color group buy that a vendor was running, so they should remain fairly unique. Once I go into Street Modified I’m unlikely to do very well for some time but people are bound to remember “that silver wagon with the blue wheels.”
Next up I’ll be ordering some “R-Comps”, aka DOT-approved racing tires. Most likely the Kumho Ecsta v710 in 245/45R17.
