Another Update April 27, 2007
From where we previously left off, the ordeal continued until mid-February. I picked up the car with the “repaired” transmission, got on I-95 South, shifted into 5th gear, and a moment later the shifter popped out of gear. This repeated several times so two exits later I exited the highway and got back on to I-95 North. Back on the surface streets, the transmission then got itself stuck in 2nd.
The following week they swapped in my original transmission and sent the STi-geared tranny to Jose’s new shop in Alabama. I’ve been driving the car since, but the tune is way off (boost targets too low below 3500RPM), it’s consuming a boatload of oil, and sometime in March it developed some power loss and what sounds (and smells) like an exhaust leak.
I’ll be dropping the car off tomorrow to get those things fixed, the trannies re-swapped, a different cat-back exhaust put on, and a boost gauge installed.
I do find that I’m missing the cams. Not so much for the power, but for the wicked sound. During those brief moments when the car was running right with them installed, it sounded like it wanted to eat your children. Seriously mean. Part of me halfway hopes that they screwed up something bad so they have to pull the engine again, a perfect excuse to order a new set of 272-degree cams from a different manufacturer.
Failing that, I may go back to the original headers. The Gruppe-S headers don’t make the car sound bad but the “boxer rumble” is much less distinct with them, and I miss it.
