The good, the bad, and the ugly May 7, 2007
The good: Picked the car up this evening. Sounds good, pulls hard, and no more exhaust fumes coming in through the A/C vents.
The bad: Over-boosts practically on-demand in 5th gear, managed to do it once in 4th too. Still a fair amount of smoke exiting the exhaust.
The ugly: New Apexi GT Spec cat-back is melting my rear bumper.
Will have to watch for oil consumption over the next two weeks but it seems to be in good enough condition for the 5/20 autocross at Homestead. With the IRCC and Hialeah sites no longer available and Karts monopolizing Homestead this may be my last shot at cone carving for a while.
Hard to believe that it’s been eight months since this disaster started…

I have been following your saga with interest. I recently bought a silver 2005 9-2X Aero, and in part your saga has convinced me to keep the mods tame
. Stage 2 and minor suspension mods. Hope it all works out for you soon.
Stage 2 is fun, especially with an intake, but this is way better. In retrospect I’d have been better off trading up to an ‘06 with the factory 2.5L and doing the rest of the mods piecemeal in my driveway, but that ship sailed long ago…
The good news is that oil consumption is the only lingering issue of any concern. Japtrix found a leak so if consumption is low then the smoke is probably just a little blow-by and nothing to worry about. If consumption remains high then I may be looking at having to get the engine pulled yet-again to replace the piston rings, which carries the risk of another round of inadvertent assembly mistakes.
Over-boost will eventually get sorted out with more tuning, or ditching the Perrin EBCS for the GM version. I’m also confident that there’s still more power and boost to be found from 2,000-3,500 RPMs.
Here in Canada there were no 06 9-2Xs so no 2.5Ls. But I had that discussion with one of the tuners up here, if you want lots of performance start with the STi
.
No STi wagon
